Would I seriously be able to call myself a Wholesome Earth-Mother Domestic-Godesss type if I hadn't ticked the 'Granny Square' box? No.
Saying that- I never would call myself a Wholesome Earth-Mother Domestic-Godesss type.
But I have dabbled in a little crazy-square love and I thought I would share it with you. I learnt to crochet when I was a wee bush-girl and didn't pick up a crochet hook again (4.5mm by the way) until I started this in my 30's. I had to have a quick revise over on YouTube. ...This tutorial seems pretty clear. And this Flickr pool is fairly inspirational...
I gave this one to Ashley for his 2nd Christmas.
Jump now to hear the whoooooole story...
I started making it thinking that it would be a great way to use up a few left-over bits of wool. About 20 rolls, and £50 quid later I decided it was big enough. For ages I had a huge bag of finished squares lurking around, being moved from cupboard to sideboard, because I couldn't bring myself to stitch them all together in the fear I would do it 'wrong'. This happens a lot. I am trying to get over this. It's hard.
In the end I just went out and bought some black wool to crocheted it together. First I had to add a row or two around every square to create a solid background colour. I did dabble with the idea of blocking some of the smaller ones, but dont think I did in the end.
Halfway through this background thing I ran out of black wool and went out to buy some more. When I got it home I discovered that the new balls weren't as 'black' as the ones I'd been using. I know. I took them back but the very kind lady in the shop told me that theat was the only black they had. She went on to say that every batch is different even in the same BRAND. And here I was thinking that black was black. Was black.
Cue tantrum. The squares were shoved back in the cupboard. There was no way I was going to 'ruin' my hard work by using two different tones of black. I think it stayed there in the cupboard for aaaaaaaages until finally I saw reason, dug them out and continued.

i wish i was half as creative as you my love u know i will be calling you for some serious cratf ideas for school etc x
